Pac-12Some college head coaches love the grind of recruiting, which has seemingly become even more than a 24/7/365 investment on the part of coaches and their staffs.

Other head coaches, many of whom often have an eye on the NFL, are not as engaged on the recruiting trail and prefer to focus their efforts on game days and those leading up to those coveted Saturdays in the Fall.

One Pac-12 fan wants to know whether or not head coaches could be less involved and simply delegate most of the recruiting responsibility to staff members who are strictly hired to deal with personnel/recruiting.

On today’s episode of Locked On Pac-12, I look at how college football coaches use recruiting as a tool to develop their programs, and how important it is for them to be involved with it.

Though it may appeal to some, it’s hard to envision (for several reasons) a world in which head football coaches are not heavily involved on the recruiting trail.

It has become more and more of a team effort with recruiting-specific staff on schools’ payrolls, but at the end of the day, it’s often the head coach who’s able to land a program’s biggest recruits.

He has many things going for him as Oregon’s next head coach: a strong schematic background, a program that has been recruiting better than ever for the last 4-5 years, and a roster with plenty of returners from a 10-win team.

Still, as a first-time HC at a school with a fanbase yearning for a high-level and homegrown quarterback, Lanning has much to prove as he embarks on his career in Eugene.
