Steve Ritchie covers track and field as a columnist for SportsPac12.
He has been involved in the sport for more than 50 years as reporter, coach, athlete, official, meet organizer and fan. Ritchie has covered World Championships in Berlin, Moscow, Beijing, Portland and Daegu for a number of publications, as well as covering multiple Olympic Trials, NCAA Championships, Pac-12 Championships, and Prefontaine Classics. In 2015 he received the James O. Dunaway Award for excellence in track and field journalism from the Track & Field Writers of America.
Ritchie has coached a total of 45 seasons of cross country and track and field at Kennedy High School in Mt. Angel, Oregon. His teams have won 20 district championships and one girls state championship, and he was the Oregon 2A Girls Coach of the Year in 2015. Ritchie is also the co-director of the Silver Falls Cross Country Invitational, which has been held continuously for 50 years, making it one of the oldest and most iconic cross country meets in Oregon.
His connection to Hayward Field and the University of Oregon track program goes back to 1962 when the Ducks won their first NCAA championship. Ritchie is eagerly anticipating the 2020 Pac-12 meet at the rebuilt Hayward Field in May and the Oregon high school championships there two weeks later.
