This year’s Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament figures to be full of surprises, given the parity that characterized the 2020-21 season.

In this column, I take a quick look back at selected individual player stats before highlighting some tournament history and trends, including top five all-time head coach win percentages in the Pac-12- tournament; championships and runner-ups by seed; finals appearances by seed; all-time records by seed; and all-time records by seed.

Combined with my Pac-12 Tournament Team Capsules and Dane Miller’s Previews, these notes provide the equivalent of a game day program for viewing the matchups.

Regular Season Individual Player Notes

‣ Chris Duarte is one of two players in the nation averaging at least 17 points per game, 1.5 steals per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, 2.4 assists pregame and blocking at least 0.9 shots per game—and the only player from a Power Conference.

‣ This season, McKinley Wright IV is one of just nine players and thee from a Power Conference averaging at least 15 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. Of those nine players, Wright’s 2.1 turnovers committed per game are the second fewest.

‣ Evan Mobley is one of two players in the nation averaging at least 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game. His 10 double-doubles on the season are the 19th most in the nation.

‣ Colorado has held opponents to 72 points or less in 23 of 27 games this season for 4th most in the nation.

Pac-12 Tournament Notes

‣ Washington State is the only team that has never advanced to the championship game.

‣ Colorado has been knocked out of the tournament by Arizona five times. The Buffs have only lost single games to Oregon, Washington, and Washington State.

‣ The most played matchup is Arizona vs UCLA with 10 meetings in the tournament (5-5). We will not see that this year, but we have a chance at the second most played matchup, a Washington State win over Arizona State would set up the eighth all-time tournament meeting between the Cougars and Oregon (Ducks lead 4-3).

‣ The six seed is 3-0 in the championship game, so if Stanford gets there you can book it.

‣ Mark Fox and Kyle Smith both have perfect 1-0 marks in the tournament, thanks to opening wins for each last season. Among active coaches with more than one tournament game coached Dana Altman has the best win percentage at .760 (19-6). That mark for Altman is the best of any conference coach all-time.
